Dr. Stephen Waers was officially inaugurated as the 16th president of Milligan University on Oct. 25. The historic event in Seeger Chapel drew a crowd of over 250 students, faculty, alumni and friends. The ceremony featured performances from both the choir and orchestra.
Waers comes to Milligan from Point University, where he was the chief academic officer and information officer. He got his bachelor’s degree in humanities and Bible studies at Point, a master of divinity degree at Emmanuel Christian Seminary, and his Ph.D. at Marquette University.
In his speech, Waers praised Milligan and its community, and highlighted the importance of a Christian liberal arts education.
The event began with a performance from Milligan’s orchestra and choir, accompanying a procession of staff in their traditional academic regalia. Welcome speeches were given on behalf of the academic community, the Christian community, the board of trustees, the faculty and staff, and the students and alumni. Waers selected two passages of scripture to be read in accordance with his speech.
Waers is succeeding Dr. Bill Greer after his 14 years of service as the president. Greer is confident in the future of Milligan. He praised Waers in his speech, citing his creativity, personability and inquisitive nature.
Waers’ inauguration took place during Milligan’s homecoming week, which followed a series of inauguration events.
“This week was full of activities and stress,” Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Rich Aubrey said. “but it was a great celebration worthy of ushering in a new year for Milligan.”
Earlier that week, students had the opportunity to meet the new president at Apple Fest, an SGA event held outside of Hart Hall. Waers used this chance to show his family values by conducting a drawing contest for his daughters.
Later on in the week, Milligan hosted their own inauguration service during chapel, altering the typical chapel format to a time of prayer for the school’s new season under different leadership. There was also a series of dinners, luncheons and receptions for the alumni and staff.
