As temperatures begin to drop and the fall semester continues, students may be on the lookout for ways to provide a quick break from the books. One group on campus working to host such campus activities are the Goah Scholars.
Members of Goah are recipients of the Goah Diversity Scholarship, which recognizes minority students that Milligan believes enhance the education of the campus by sharing their diverse and cultural experiences.
Goah President and junior Christopher Trevino is eager to infuse the vision of Goah into their diversity projects for the rest of the academic year.
“The vision of Goah is to produce servant leaders who take initiative, spread diversity, and are proactive in both the Goah and Milligan community as a whole,” he said. “This year we have more people asking about Goah and knowing what it is. We have put on more events than ever to sponsor ourselves and spread diversity on campus.”
Trevino is following in the footsteps of his older brother, Luis, who was also president of Goah before graduating in 2015. He said he wanted to become president to revive the program once Gwen Ellis, the current scholarship director, received the position.
The program has grown from a small group of students that occasionally met once a month and put on a very small number of events, to a strong united front of 32 students.
They have already hosted campus events such as the MCA bonfire and the Welcome Week block party.
Future events will include the following, with exact dates TBD:
- MLK Day Conversation During Chapel
- MLK Day Program
- Black History Month Event
- Multicultural Fair
“We hope the Goah scholarship grows to a level of prestige where it is common knowledge that being a Goah scholar is a huge honor,” Trevino said. He believes this will help grow the number of students who receive the scholarship each year.
