This semester, Milligan has reintroduced their partnership with ETSU and their Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). The agreement allows Milligan students to enroll in military science classes through the ROTC program at ETSU. These classes will be transcripted as Milligan courses.
Milligan’s Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, Garland Young, explained that Milligan has had this agreement for the last three years.

“However, our emergence from the pandemic has given us a chance to market it more actively to prospective and current students,” he said.

Milligan has now placed these courses in the academic catalog and trying to get the word out across campus. ETSU’s Military Science program staff even attended Milligan’s Rush Day on Sept 14.

The program provides scholarships to qualified students. These cover 100% of tuition, most fees, $600 per semester for books, and $420 per month for personal expenses.  Students completing this 25-credit course of study become qualified for service as commissioned officers in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard.

“The courses in the program focus primarily on developing leadership skills,” Young added.

According to ETSU’s website, students in the ROTC program are able to choose from 17 different career fields. Through class work and field training, students will learn what it takes to lead groups, overcome challenges, and succeed in a competitive environment

Junior Brandon Malone hopes that students will take advantage of this program.

“I think it will bring a lot of opportunities to students on campus,” he said. “It also helps to diversify career choices.”

Although the program is designed to be completed in four years, students are able to complete all requirements within a two-year period by participating in a summer leadership course.
