Deadlines for Milligan University’s study abroad programs are Feb. 15 for 2021 travels and Oct. 15 for 2022 trips.
Milligan offers a multitude of programs that allow students to travel abroad. These include both faculty led and approved affiliate organization options.
Faculty led programs include two humanities tour options, an international field work course, a national parks tour and a five-week summer program in Oviedo, Spain. For more details on these options and the approved affiliate organization programs, click here.
The cost of these programs typically matches what students pay for a semester of classes at Milligan according to Dr. Allysha Martin, director of study abroad and a professor of Spanish and humanities.
“While students are not able to use internal scholarships towards their study abroad experience, we are committed to providing specific Study Abroad scholarships through Milligan, which average $7,000 per student who applies, to help offset other internal aid,” said Martin. “Otherwise, students may use any external aid.”
Students must be full-time for at least one semester at Milligan with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above, follow the university’s conduct expectations and plan to return for one full semester, unless a graduating senior, in order to qualify for an upcoming study abroad program.
Luckily, application deadlines are still open and have been extended for students.
“Normally, we only accept scholarship applications once a year in February for the whole academic year,” said Martin.
COVID-19 is responsible for the change as it has complicated international travel, but the expectation is that these education opportunities will be open to students in 2021.
“It’s still somewhat unknown and dependent on the country and the program provider. I encourage students to go to our website and click on our providers to see which programs and locations are open,” says Martin. “For now, we are **hoping** Maymester programs, like the Humanities Tour and the Oviedo Spain program, will be able to travel in 2021. Otherwise, it looks like most programs will be open for Fall 2021 registration.”
Milligan will be hosting virtual study abroad fairs this year with the spring fair taking place Feb. 8-11. It will be hosted online by Luna Fairs, a virtual fair software. Students can sign up for free at any time. To register and get matched with a program or program provider, click here.
