On Saturday, Emmanuel Christian Seminary and Milligan College hosted an eight-hour forum and group study aimed at encouraging women in ministerial leadership roles, as well as providing resources and information for Christian women. The day-long event offered 3 SFP for the attendees.

The forum consisted of five sessions, each targeting a different aspect of women in the Christian faith.

The speakers included: Theresa Garbe, Milligan director of alumni relations; Professor Liesl Huhn, MBA program coordinator and adjunct instructor of Bible; Dr. Miriam Perkins, associate professor of theology and society at Emmanuel Seminary; and guest speaker Mandy Smith, pastor of University of Christian Church in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Miriam Perkins leads a session on “Women Advocating for Women” in the Thompson Center on Emmanuel’s campus.

Each session that met discussed various topics. An introduction session followed Smith’s struggle with coming into her calling, Huhn led a session on the creation chapters of Genesis, Garbe led a session on 1 Timothy 2 on the idea of women being silenced, Perkins led a session called “Women Advocating for Women: 10 Commandments,” and Smith concluded on how she came to terms with her calling.

Around 20 people attended the conference in hopes of being encouraged in their field and also increasing their general knowledge about the subject of women in leadership roles in the church.

One attendee, senior business major Praise Gichuru, said, “My heart feels this peace and encouragement that Milligan takes this subject seriously and really shows what this institution is about. Women leading in the church can be a divisive topic, but I left this conference feeling affirmed in my calling.”
