Late last week, Jeff Smith, the director of multicultural engagement and of The Betty Goah Diversity Scholars Program, resigned for reasons unknown.

Smith joined Milligan’s staff at the start of the 2014-15 school year, making his time at Milligan fairly short.

Last Thursday, the Goah scholars received an email from Garland Young, the Dean of Students, that relayed the news of Smith’s resignation. Smith’s resignation came as a surprise to the Goah scholars, especially to Goah President Jake Beverly.

“I was surprised when Dr. Smith resigned, but I know he cares about the students in the Goah program.” said Beverly. “I will miss him, but I also know our program will continue to do well this year.”

Rachel Owens, an admissions counselor at Milligan, has stepped up to fill the role as interim program director.

The Betty Goah Diversity Scholars Program is a scholarship program made up of roughly 80 students who aim to share their cultural experiences with campus.
