The Milligan Arts Council continued its Artist Lecture Series on April 3, highlighting a local artist from nearby Johnson City. The latest installment featured Jason Flack, a self-taught “urban folk” expressionist whose unique style and compelling personal story captivated attendees.
Flack, the 2023 recipient of the Art Alliance Mountain Empire Art Achievement Award, has had his work displayed at institutions including the William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, Virginia, and the Reece Museum at East Tennessee State University. His art has also been featured in numerous private exhibitions throughout downtown Johnson City, cementing his influence in the local art scene.
Beyond his artwork, Flack has been recognized for his thought-provoking insights. He was a featured visionary speaker at TEDxJohnsonCity in 2023 and returned in 2024 as a demonstration artist.
During his lecture, Flack emphasized that his art is deeply tied to storytelling and personal reflection. He spoke candidly about his life experiences, including periods of homelessness and the emotional impact of losing his twin sister.
One particularly moving anecdote detailed the moment he began painting. At a court hearing for a close friend, the friend’s mother gave him a Royal & Langnickel paint set. Although already an artist, Flack had never worked with paint before. Reflecting on that moment, he said, “I didn’t know how important it would be until much, much later.”
