Open mic, but no open seats. Students packed lower Seeger on Nov. 21 for the first Open Mic Night of the year.

Students, faculty, and even alumni came together for an hour and a half of pure entertainment. The night consisted of 18 acts from a wide range of musical backgrounds and genres, from rapping to the alma mater there was something for everyone!

“When it comes to Open Mic Night, the goal for CAB is to provide a fun and encouraging place for performers to put their talents on stage, or to even just have fun on stage regardless of talent,” said junior CAB member Dillon Craig.

For many students, this was their first Open Mic Night. Freshman Nicholas Caporaso, also known by his stage name “NickyCaps”, performed an original song “Defanged Serpent” which was a hit with the crowd.

“I’m new here and I’ve been making music for a while so I thought it would be a good way to share my talent with my new friends who don’t know much about me and my music.”

Sophomore Luke Cumming is no stranger to the Open Mic Night stage. Cumming performed two very different acts, one was a karaoke style performance with Griffin McAllister to Shawn Mendes’ song  “Stiches”, and the other was with his band “Guys in Di(skye)s” where they performed Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ song “Die with a Smile”.

“I enjoy playing music,” said Cumming. “It’s cool working with a group of people toward a goal of sharing what you love to do and contributing to an awesome night of people sharing what they love to do.”

Another loyal Open Mic Night performer who was back this semester is Dr. Miller with his renditions of the Milligan alma mater. This semester he partnered with junior Bryant Magness to perform the alma mater to the tune of “Mary, Did You Know”, which he called “Bryant, Did You Know?”.

“I think “Bryant, Did You Know?” was hysterical,” said Caporaso. “I don’t know Dr. Miller that well but having him whip that out and just hand Bryant a script and say read this was really fun. It was impressive considering they did not practice and it was so last minute.”

A date for the next Open Mic Night has not been announced, but check your email for updates from Campus Activities to stay up to date on events around campus.
