Milligan’s “Murmuration” exhibit, a tribute to art and design, ran from Oct. 21-Nov. 12, showcasing pieces by Milligan’s art programs.

The group exhibition featured recent works by Milligan’s art and design professors Kelsey Ellis, instructor of art, and Art Brown, associate professor of graphic design. Sydney Reeder-Wood, Milligans artist-in-residence for 2024–25, along with alumni Adam J. Trabold (’20) and Kathryn (Baylor ’22) Trabold, presented their work alongside the professors. The exhibition also showcased works by students in the fine arts programs and participants of Milligan’s Student Art Club.

“Murmuration” featured 62 artworks by 36 artists, including digital media and photography, in the form of paintings, collages, book cover redesigns, and more.

“It was really exciting. It was definitely a new experience, but the project I am working on, I am very proud of, and it was cool to get to share that with people,” said Madeleine Haagen, a senior musical theater major, about “Murmuration,” which was her first exhibit.

The opening of the reception coincided with both Milligan’s homecoming and the inauguration of Dr. Stephen Waers, Milligan’s 16th president. The last exhibition, featuring both Milligan’s professors and students took place in 2011, following the inauguration of President Dr. Bill Greer, according to a Milligan press release.

“I was presenting an artwork in a show for the homecoming weekend and the inauguration of the president, which is a really important thing,” said André Bazzana Semensato, a senior graphic design major. He felt honored to present his work in a meaningful setting.

With “Murmuration” closed, the art department is now focusing on its next showcase, “Pause.” From Nov. 17–Dec. 3, senior graphic design and interactive media design majors will present their work in the Milligan Art Gallery, located in Derthick Hall. The opening reception will take place on Sunday, Nov. 17, from 2-4 p.m. and is open to the public.
