When students are looking for a university to call home, one of the most overlooked boxes on their checklist is a cozy or happy place to unwind and get some work done. With the hectic life of being a student, it can be difficult for students to find a place on campus that allows them to do just this. After talking with Milligan students, many of them had their own go-to spots.  .

1.      Derthick Hall

Named after the eighth president, Henry Derthick, Derthick Hall was one of the first buildings on Milligan’s campus. Since being renovated, Derthick is home to many of the classes offered on campus. In 2001 a red brick walkway and benches were added just outside the hall. This has since been named the Mary Sword Commons. This is Kendell Arnold’s favorite spot.

“I like Derthick and the benches they have in front,” she said. “You can sit under the shaded trees, and it’s also very pretty with the flowers and the cross.”

2.      Milligan Village

The Village includes the newest buildings on campus. It is home to upperclassmen. This group of buildings includes a large yard area, benches, a concrete path, a disc golf course and a sand volleyball court.  Sophomore Sam Hauser said it carries the best view on campus.

“I like to sit up there because it is above most of campus so I can see the sunset,” Hauser said.

3.      The SUB

The McMahan Student Center, which most everyone calls the Student Union Building or SUB, is where many students choose to work on their homework or hang out with their friends. It includes the bookstore and the grill.

“The sub is an easy and convenient place to study,” according to Megan Haire. “It’s also a good place to get some food.”

4.      The library

When asked about her favorite place on campus, Isabelle Tally didn’t hesitate.

“The library. I am a big fan of books so just being around books is very relaxing,” she explained.

The Welshimer Library is where you can find a number of students who are looking for a quiet place on campus. The library also has an outdoor area that students enjoy. Morgan Dyer calls this place her favorite spot, saying, “There is a little spot behind the library with all the lights. It’s very safe and calm, it’s a place where you can just breathe and take a break.”
