After being on a two-year hiatus, the Humanities Tour is back.

This summer’s tour will take students on a trip around the hotspots of Europe, including London, Normandy, Paris, Florence, Assisi and Rome. Milligan is continuing their partnership with Education First Educational Tours (EF) in order to provide this opportunity to students. The tour will be 16 days total including travel times to and from Europe according to the official itinerary from EF.

This tour will have four chaperones: Dr. Todd Edmondson, Professor of Composition and Humanities and his wife Lisa, and David Siebenaler, Professor of Humanities and Church History and his wife Debbie. Dr. Edmondson will be the leader of the tour.

Students wishing to go on the 2022 tour must register for the pre-tour prep course taking place this spring during regular registration for spring semester courses. There is no limit to how many students may sign up for the tour.

The pre-tour course will count as one credit hour. Students can expect to go over several topics during the spring course. According to Dr. Edmondson, these will include talking through the logistics of travel such as currency exchange and travel policies, reading and discussing a short book about some of the places students will visit and giving a short group presentation near the end of the course about specific places they will travel to on the tour.

While on the tour, students will be required to write a daily journal reflecting on events and their experiences. Completing the journal and tour fulfills the credit requirements for Humanities 202.

The current number of students signed up for the tour is 18, and the current total cost of the tour is around $5,000. However, as more students join, the price could decrease. The full price can be paid either all at once or in smaller installments set up by the student through EF’s payment plans.

As it currently stands, EF has not required students to get COVID-19 vaccines, but Dr. Edmondson advises any that want to go be fully vaccinated just in case due to constantly changing requirements in Europe and for international travel.

“It’s been one of my best experiences while being at Milligan. There’s no real substitute for seeing things you’ve learned about on the ground as opposed to reading about them in books or hearing about them in lectures,” Edmondson said, “The cost may be intimidating for some students, but the reality is that for what is included and what we’re able to see as a group, it’s an amazing opportunity to see things together in a relatively short amount of time.”
