Connecting…, the senior graphic design show featuring work by Sydney Rhoton, Seth Hice and Logan Mink, opened to the public in an online gallery on Friday.

“With communication and problem-solving being key components to design,” said Hice, “I appreciate the process of creating work that not only solves a problem but does so in a fun and engaging way. If design is meant to be seen, why not make it enjoyable?”

More people than ever were able to enjoy the gallery, which can be accessed through a link or QR code.

Following the link allows viewers to enter a virtual reality experience, walking through the virtual showroom and approaching each design mounted on the walls.

“The online gallery is definitely different but in a good way,” said Mink. “I feel like all my friends and family can easily see my work in ways a physical show wouldn’t allow.”

Other students expressed their disappointment at the loss of the personal experience with the show.

“I would definitely prefer to have a physical show in Milligan’s gallery,” said Rhoton. “It’s a really special event that I’m sad I don’t get to experience. That being said, I’m very proud of how the virtual exhibit turned out. We still got to have our pieces displayed on walls, which is as close as you can get to an actual gallery.”

The seniors expressed thanks to the graphic design professor, Art Brown, for his influence on their artwork.

“I’d say the biggest influences on my work have been Professor Art Brown and the designers he has introduced me to,” added Rhoton.

The seniors worked incredibly hard to create their graphic design pieces and commented on the challenges of creative work.

“I was presented with the challenge on making the word look good,” said Mink, speaking on his favorite piece, “Crap,” made in late 2020. “I’m really proud of how it turned out.”

“I actually worked on the Dos Gatos campaign piece over the 2019 Christmas break on my own time, and it was one of the most involved and enjoyable projects I’ve worked on,” said Rhoton regarding her Two Cats + a Herd of Buffalo promotional campaign for a 2020 art show.

“Minimalism and order are just a few things I strive for,” said Hice. “I find the challenge of breaking down the necessary parts of a design to be a rewarding experience.”

The showcase will stay up until June 15, and is available for all to see here.
