The Student Government Association (SGA) at Milligan University introduced a new award to the Milligan community at the beginning of November. The award is named “Making a Difference” and was developed to highlight the student, faculty or staff member who has gone the extra mile to serve the community this semester.
According to the SGA president, Dalton Shell, the difficult times we are facing every day have called for people to take care of each other on a new level. The Making a Difference award is primarily supposed to recognize the people who have worked extra hard to be a “Christ-like” servant leader and who have committed themselves to maintain a caring atmosphere within the Milligan community.
“The idea came from myself and SGA Treasurer Chase McGlamery,” said Shell. “We both saw people in the Milligan community who were going above and beyond every day in order to take care of those in their community. While Milligan gives a Leaders in Christian Service award out to students annually, we wanted students, faculty, and staff to be recognized and appreciated by a student organization.”
Just as the Leaders in Christian Service award is handed out annually, the SGA hopes for the Making a Difference award to become an annual recognition. Because of the regulations made to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on Milligan’s campus, no ceremony will be held this year to distribute the award and celebrate the recipient. However, this is something that possibly will appear in the future.
To determine who is the most suitable for the award, the SGA sent out a questionnaire to all students at Milligan to nominate their candidates.
“The SGA Executive Cabinet will review the nominations, talk with students and others in the community, and decide amongst ourselves,” said Shell. “So far, all of the nominations submitted are beyond worthy, making it a tough challenge for this first award.”
On a last encouraging note from Shell, he said: “The great thing about Milligan students, faculty, and staff is that they serve because they care. They don’t serve in seek of recognition or some award, they do it because they feel like that is what they are called to do. That is what makes this community such a special place. Keep up the good work, Buffs!“
