Milligan University’s water buffs competed in their first annual inter-squad home meet this Saturday.

“It was a fun meet that was filled with competition and laughter,” said Senior Jordan Clark.

The entire team was separated into an orange team and a black team, with their scores totaled at the end of the meet to decide the winner.

“It was a tight meet,” said Junior Marlie Henegar. “The black team beat the orange team by one point.”

The swimmers competed in various races ranging from formal to new events. These creative events added to the fun but competitive atmosphere of the meet. Freshman Riley Gregor was awarded winner of the belly flop competition.

“My favorite event was probably the 50 free with fins or the 25 free with parachutes,” said Henegar. “They were different from traditional racing events so it made things fun!”

The water buffs gather for a team cheer at the closing of their home meet.

“I felt like I did good as far as my performance went,” said Clark. “I was definitely not too excited about swimming the 200 fly but I am glad I did.”

The atmosphere helped to build both team spirit and skill.

“I was happy with my swims and I felt like I was stronger than I was at the last meet,” said Clark. “The team was really excited about having the inter-squad meet, and I feel like the team atmosphere makes everyone swim faster.”

The teams competed respectfully.

“I think the teams had good sportsmanship towards each other,” said Henegar.

“We are all so tight knit that even though we were on different teams we were still cheering for everyone,” added Clark.

The event is set to become an annual occurrence.

“This is something that Coach Spencer is going to do annually now,” commented Clark. Coach Spencer Scarth, in his second year of coaching, was responsible for the organization of the home meet.

“I’m so glad Spencer does this, because our old coach didn’t,” said Clark.

Spencer’s leadership allowed the Milligan Swim team to increase their skill and team spirit with the event.
