Dos Gatos Coffee Bar is currently hosting an art exhibit featuring Milligan students’ work. The opening night and reception was Feb. 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., but the exhibit will be up until Feb. 24.

The poster for the event was designed by Sydney Rhoton.

The exhibit held an open call for art, graphic design and photography students to submit up to two works from any 2019 arts courses. Details of the show and application instructions were shared with these students through an email sent on Jan. 16. Students were required to submit their works by Feb. 4, ready to hang with a sheet stating their name, grade, a title for the piece, and the medium attached.

All students that met the qualifications were accepted.  This is a big deal for artists, since most shows like this would require an application fee or be juried according to Will Major, Milligan photography professor.

32 students submitted works, totaling 62 pieces on display. Artists and professors alike were ecstatic about the show and the artwork being displayed.

The reward for professors comes when students get excited to have their work out in the community. It’s also a great chance for the Milligan community to support their peers according to Art Brown, assistant professor of communications at Milligan.

“It’s pretty cool to have your stuff out in the community,” said Sydney Rhoton, junior graphic design major.

Sydney Rhoton’s sunset photo is her favorite of the two pieces she has on display.

She has two pieces on display in the exhibit but said her favorite of the two would have to be a sunset photo she took.

The Two Cats + a Herd of Buffalo exhibit is an annual event, but it used to be known as Art of the Buffalo School according to Brown.

Dick Nelson, owner of Dos Gatos, used to host the event in the front of Nelson Fine Art and Frames but has since rented out that space. After two years without the show, Brown got in touch with Nelson, and he offered up Dos Gatos as a new location for the event.

Two Cats + a Herd of Buffalo is a great opportunity for Milligan students to showcase their work and build their resume while simultaneously helping to foster the supportive relationship between Milligan and the local community.
