President Greer announced in December that the Fall would bring additions of three new clubs to Milligan: disc golf, fly fishing and a drum line.

These clubs will be different from regular clubs due to the requirements and expectations set forth. They are not a part of the athletic program, but have competitive aspects.

Tim Barr, a member of the Professional Disc Golf Association, will lead Milligan’s new disc golf team. In 2017, a nine-hole course was added to Milligan’s campus for recreational use, but will now be used competitively. The disc golf team will also compete at neighboring courses 30 to 45 minutes away from campus.

Fly fishing currently exists as an active club and is led by Zach Nave, head cycling coach. Milligan sits within 40 minutes of premier fly fishing areas. Students involved in this club will not just fly fish, but also have opportunities to get involved in conservation efforts and community service.

These three new clubs share one common purpose: to increase enrollment and enhance opportunities at Milligan. There will be events and competitions to look out for in the future on and off Milligan’s campus.

The additions of the disc golf, fly fishing and drum line activities are a way to enhance enrollment numbers and bring a more diverse group of students to Milligan. “[The clubs are] going to give students a way to enhance their experience at Milligan because they are value-added opportunities,” said Mark Fox, vice president for student development and athletics.

David Whaley, former Dobyns-Bennett High School percussion instructor, will lead the drum line. This new club plans to build on the arts already established at Milligan, as well as bring in a more diverse and select group of individuals looking to “rock-on” in college. Whaley already has at least two performance opportunities lined up for next fall.

“It’s anticipated that (the drum line) will represent the college in a variety of ways for the school and the community,” said Fox.
