Each semester, Milligan College works to provide fun, free or cheap events for their students. Some end up being a one-time event with little success while others return year after year, with much anticipation from students. This is the case for Milligan’s annual Resident Life Week. Res Life Week was held the week of Oct. 28 to Nov. 1.
During Res Life Week, each dorm hall creates and hosts an event for all students to enjoy. It is typically up to the Resident Assistants (RAs) and Resident Hall Directors (RDs) to plan the events.
Res Life Week started with Flannel Fest, where students enjoyed a live band, s’mores and hot drinks. They were also encouraged to wear their favorite flannel. Tuesday’s event was Sutton’s Scare Hall, where students went through Sutton Hall on “scare tours.”
The week continued on Wednesday with Hart’s Halloween Karaoke. Students participated in karaoke and were asked to wear a costume. There were door prizes for best costume, best vocals and best performance.
The biggest event, Webb County Fair, was supposed to happen on Thursday night, but unfortunately, the weather was uncooperative, and the event had to be postponed until Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Senior Nathan Hastings said he was a little disappointed that Webb County Fair was moved to next week. “I’ve always had basketball practice during Webb County Fair and couldn’t go,” he said. “This year we didn’t have practice, and I was excited to finally go. I hope I can go next week.”
Senior and Village RA, Teve Mushayamunda, talked about being a part of Res Life and planning the events. Since he is an RA in the Village, Mushayamunda is part of the upper level housing staff of Res Life and helped plan Flannel Fest. “I thought it went pretty well,” he said. “This was my second time planning for Flannel Fest and planning was easier with that year of experience.”
Mushayamunda mentioned his favorite event was Webb County Fair. “It’s a classic event that a lot of people show up and have fun with,” he said. He added that he was a little sad when it got rescheduled but understood because the rain was so heavy.
He also talked about why he likes Res Life Week and why he thinks it is important. According to Mushayamunda, Res Life Week is meant to give students a little break in the middle of the semester, bring people together and create new friendships. “It is one of those Milligan events that is unique,” he said. “It brings people together and creates community.”
