On Sept. 24, Milligan students gathered together for some friendly competition at the Burleson sand volleyball court outside of Hart Hall to help victims of hurricane Dorian.

There were 10 different teams that competed in the tournament; the cost to play was 5 dollars per person, and the event raised 300 dollars overall, adding to the 450 dollars raised through online donations.

The fundraiser idea was originally Goah’s, but after collaborating with the Student Government Association, it came to life.

“This was a joint effort for Goah and SGA, said Mikayla Brama, president of Goah. “We decided we wanted to do an event for everyone to be able to show up to make the event more meaningful.”

Jenee Boston, SGA president, says that volleyball is a good way to build community. “We started actively planning for the event September 19, and we knew volleyball would get everyone excited to play together,” said Boston.

Each team had a maximum of six people, though some teams had less. The matches before the final went to 15 points. The final game went to 21 points, and the final score was 21-14 between the “Come Back Team” and the “Blue Team.”

The winner of the tournament was the “Come Back Team,” and they received 10 dollar Chick-Fil-A gift cards as well as a Milligan shirt for each member of the team. The second-place team was the “Blue Team,” and each member received a five dollar Dunkin’ Donuts gift card along with a Milligan shirt.

This was a way to raise awareness for hurricane Dorian victims, and also promote Goah.

“A lot of non-Goah students don’t know about us, so we want to raise awareness for Goah to create diversity on campus,” said Elyse Ohlinger, secretary of Goah. “We want to let the campus know that we’re more than just scholarship students. We want to get people involved.”

As of now, there are no future events planned for hurricane Dorian fundraising.
