Rush Day 2019 saw new clubs and familiar faces filling spaces along the sidewalks at the Mary Sword Commons. Rush day is a chance for clubs and local businesses to promote themselves to the students of Milligan College.
The event took place from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and each of the first 300 students in attendance received a free Chick-fil-a chicken biscuit.
Rush Day occurs annually and is anticipated by students at Milligan. Senior Reese Brackins even joked on Twitter, “Tomorrow, Milligan has Rush Day. It’s kinda like a regular school’s rush day but instead of joining a frat, we join Eastman Credit Union.”
The SGA used the event to raise money for Hurricane Dorian relief. Almost $300 was raised. The recent storm affected multiple students here at Milligan. Read more here: https://www.milliganstampede.com/2019/09/10/how-hurricane-dorian-affected-milligan-students/
Money was also raised through a volleyball tournament on Sept. 24th. The tournament was covered by StampedeTV and can be watched on a future newscast.
New clubs featured this year included the fly fishing club, the engineering club and the fine arts club.
“We thought [Rush Day] would be a good opportunity to reach new club members,” says Milligan Fly Fishing Club President Robert Comfort. “Our club is still relatively new, and we want to make the most of every opportunity to let people know there is a cool new way to get outdoors.”
The fly fishing club drew the attention of students at the event by bringing a fishing boat on to The Commons.
Returning groups such as LXI, Vespers, the science club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes were also present.
Vespers is a student-led worship group that meets weekly; they were promoting their yearly mountain-top worship session which was held Saturday 21. Read more here: http://www.milliganstampede.com/2019/09/24/vespers-leads-mountaintop-worship/
Businesses at the event included Ballad Health, Eastman Credit Union, The UPS Store, Bright Ridge and Office Depot.
Rush Day gives these local businesses and others a chance to inform students about what is available to them in the community, ranging from discounts to possible internships.
