2019 marked the 70th anniversary of TWIRP at Milligan College. TWIRP is a campus-hosted week of activities where “The Woman is Required to Pay.”

From Kangaroo Court and “Riders in the Sky” to Trivia Night and “Senorita” the spirit of TWIRP has remained the same. The event encourages students to make new friends, which is the main reason for hosting it so early in the school year.

“I would say the spirit of TWIRP is to inspire friendships,” said freshman Genevieve Plum. “It forces you to ask people you might not really know. It’s an opportunity to put yourself out there, no matter if it’s as a friend or as a date.”

Students compete at Thursday’s trivia night in SUB7.

TWIRP 2019 consisted of five events over the course of six days. The events were Sundaes on Sunday, bowling on Monday, Tuesday Skate Inn, Thursday Trivia (which is also a weekly event throughout the school year) and Friday Sadie Hawkins Dance.

This year the theme of TWIRP was sitcoms. Prizes were awarded at the Skate Inn for best costumes, and Trivia questions were sitcom themed.

TWIRP was sponsored by the Campus Activities Board (CAB) and organized by Jason Onks and his work study staff. Onks said he tries to keep the cost for students down every year by hosting activities both on and off campus. Bowling and skating were both held off campus in Johnson City. The cost of the events was $5 and $6 per student respectively.

In the past, TWIRP has had five events over five days, but this year CAB decided to hold five events over six days. Wednesday was chosen to have no event because of the schedules of sports teams and other activities at school.

According to Onks, TWIRP will return in the fall of 2020.
