This week has been a busy one for Milligan spring athletics, with competitions ranging from baseball and softball games to tennis and golf matches. To start off the week, the women’s tennis team won their third straight match at Bluefield in Blacksburg, Va., 5-4.
On March 19, Milligan’s baseball team won the last game against Bluefield in a three-game series. Senior Jas Ferreras played the lead role in the team’s batting efforts hitting 3-for-5, scoring twice and knocking a solo home run in the fourth. But unfortunately for the team, they lost the series 2-1.
Nathan Baker, a freshman on the men’s track and field team, became the Appalachian Athletic Conference runner of the week. This was his first AAC title, coming shortly after the first outdoor race of his Milligan career at UNC-Charlotte. Baker placed 21st overall in a 167 person race. The track and field team will be competing again March 30-31 at the Montreat College Invitational in Montreat, N.C.
On March 20, Milligan’s men’s golf competed at North Greenville University placing seventh overall at the NGU Invitational. This follows the Milligan women’s golf team placing first in the Skyhawk Invitational on March 13 in Georgia. Senior Megan Gaylor claimed fourth overall with junior Sarah Son and sophomore Nellie Berglund coming in fifth.
More recently, Milligan’s softball team is on its seventh straight win after sweeping Columbia College at home on Friday. This doubleheader follows another sweep at Montreat College just the day before.
Also, on Saturday, Milligan’s baseball team split a doubleheader against Reinhardt University, losing the first game but winning the second. Game two featured four runs in the bottom half, which led to the final score of 6-4.
Ending the week, Milligan’s tennis teams had several non-conference matches with the men’s team defeating Midway University on Friday 7-2, but falling short of a victory to Georgetown College on Saturday 6-3. Milligan’s women’s team also split the victory, winning over Midway but losing to Georgetown.
