Milligan’s new Master of Arts in humanities program has started to attract students. The program had an informational lunch on Jan. 31 in which students were given a chance to ask questions related to the program as well.

Dr. Craig Farmer and student Trey Rice discuss the program.

The program is starting to follow a five year vision goal, set two years ago. Associate Professor of English and Composition and Chair of Humanities Dr. Heather Hoover, the program director, is one person that helped set up the master’s.

“One of our goals was to create a graduate study that is encompassing,” Hoover said. “Instead of having a separate master’s for English and history, we thought it better to play off our strength in the humanities program.”

Students with a degree in any field can enter the program.

The program is a 30-hour program, meaning students must take 30 hours in order to graduate.  Students entering the program will choose one of three concentrations: cultural studies; global studies; or arts, faith and community studies. Each program has a separate professor in charge of them.

Each program follows a similar goal: to find ways to connect the community with humanities.

The program already has a number of electives that will be offered the fall and spring semesters of 2019. Electives include Models Of Community, taught by Dr. Todd Edmondson; Fear Of Islam In The West, taught by Craig Farmer; Religion In The Media, taught by Jim Dahlman; and many more.

A current undergrad interested in the program is Abigail Hook, a senior humanities major with a theology concentration.

“I really like that this program is going to have small classes, with potential to have people from many disciplines,” Hook said. “I also like the community mindset of the program.”

Hook is interested in the arts, faith and community program, which she hopes will help prepare her for doctoral studies in the field of humanities.

“I think the Master of Arts in humanities is a huge strength of Milligan,” Hook said.

The program will be  hybrid style, with a mix of face-to-face and online classes. Students can apply online. No GRE is required, but applicants must submit a resume. To apply or to look for more information on the Master of Arts in humanities program, students can go to
