A semester in college is like a mountain, as the semester goes on, the climb gets steeper. Soon, you are climbing uphill with a massive workload and running out of breath.

Before the semester gets crazy busy, seize the day and explore a place you have never been.

Here are five things to do in the area before the “to do” list piles up:

  1. Take a “pilgrimage” from Milligan to the Emmanuel Prayer Garden

“Pilgrimage” walkers understand that an adventure can come from more than just a thrilling amusement park. Adventures can rise from a state of reflection. The prayer garden is both quiet and secluded, providing the perfect place to be still and escape from the issues of everyday life. You can begin your pilgrimage simply by crossing the street to Emmanuel Christian Seminary. We all need a place to relax, and a walk is a great way to accomplish that; just look both ways before you cross the street.

2. Visit Backdoor Records for an odd and eclectic selection of music

If you are looking for new music to listen to or you just want to scan some bizarre artists while rummaging through a big crate, Backdoor Records is your place. The building looks like a giant psychedelic tattoo, but the record shop had friendly employees and a dog that roams the store. Backdoor Records is not your run of the mill music store. Occasionally, they even give out cassette tapes.
Backdoor Records is located near East Tennessee State University on West Walnut Street.

  1. Go for a scenic hike up Buffalo Mountain

Depending on your sense of adventure, Buffalo Mountain has two great options for discovering your inner Bear Grylls. You can walk the easy, scenic route or hike up the more difficult but breathtaking route. And when I say breathtaking, I am speaking literally. By the time you make it to the top, you will forget the pain of the rigorous trek and stand in awe of your surroundings.

Buffalo Mountain is located on High Ridge road and is about a five-minute drive from Milligan.

  1. Visit historic Downtown Jonesborough

A fun evening could include a trip to Jonesborough – the oldest town in Tennessee. Just a 20-minute drive from campus, Jonesborough has plenty of opportunities for nostalgia with its unique shops full of antique and handcrafted items. The town’s old-timey restaurants help you feel like a sophisticated adult while the candy store releases your inner child. Downtown Jonesborough is almost make-believe, like Mayberry in the “The Andy Griffith Show.” For the men reading this article, take my word that Jonesborough is a good place to take that pretty girl on your mind.

  1. Visit the Washington County Animal Shelter

Has it been too long since your last encounter with a dog? Or are you missing your family cat from back home? The Washington County Animal Shelter is the perfect place for you to get your dog and cat fix while also helping these animals prepare for their future families. Some of the things you can do at the shelter include holding kittens, playing with cats in a separate play room, petting a puppy or walking a dog. These animals are eager for attention, and the shelter makes for a quick stress relieving stop.
