With the semester in full swing, most of us are neck-deep in projects, papers and tests.  If you’re looking for the best place to study, look no more! Here are a four of my favorite local study spots

1. Willow Tree

216 E. Main St, Johnson City, TN 37604

Want the best of both worlds? The Willow Tree Coffeehouse and Music Room is a coffee shop and music venue located in downtown Johnson City. I had never been there before coming to college, but went as soon as I heard that it had a great studying environment. Plus, I heard the local gem had some of the best coffee and chai in the area. Inside, you’ll find plenty of tables and chairs, along with a bookstore that features books both old and new. During the evenings, the coffee shop also features local bands and storytellers.

2. The Coffee Company

444 E. Elk Ave, Elizabethton, TN 37643

Located in downtown Elizabethton, The Coffee Company offers delicious soups and baked goods, in addition to their fresh and local coffee. Though the shop doesn’t have Wi-Fi, the shop’s environment is laid back and peaceful, which makes it perfect for small study group sessions (Humanities, anyone?)

3. A library or nearby bookstore

Between Milligan’s P.H. Welshimer Memorial Library and Emmanuel Christian Seminary Library up on the hill, bookworms don’t even need to leave campus to find a cozy, literature-filled paradise in which they can properly study. If you want to get off campus, try Barnes & Noble in Johnson City. The bookstore chain also features a Starbucks.

4. Dos Gatos

324 E Main St, Johnson City, TN 37601
Formerly known as Brew Plum Coffee, Dos Gatos in downtown Johnson City features unique and local art, in addition to their stellar coffee. The shop’s cold brew coffee and unconventional sculptures make it an ideal location for students who just need to let their creative juices flow. Plus, they offer a variety of savory and sweet crêpes that are “magnifique!”

5. Blackbird Bakery

56 Piedmont Ave, Bristol, VA 24201

Located in Bristol, Virginia, Blackbird Bakery is a bit of a drive from Milligan. It’s the perfect place, however, for night-owls, especially those who need a change of scenery.  The 24-hour bakery offers a variety of tasty treats, including homemade donuts, macarons, ice cream and more. Be sure to bring your student ID to take advantage of the student discount!
